University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU)

Expertise

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is a leading Spanish teaching and research institution, geographically distributed in three campuses over the three provinces of the Basque Country.

The UPV/EHU has been recognized as an International Excellence Research Campus by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Since the first Research Framework Programmes, the UPV/EHU has been very active and has participated in numerous European-funded projects, including Marie Skłodowska Curie actions, COST projects, as well as to ERC Starting, Consolidator, and Advanced Grants.

IKERBASQUE, the Basque Foundation for Science, is a consolidated organization with about 290 researchers from 36 different countries, from all fields of knowledge and with a firm commitment to the hiring of female researchers, as well as to promoting the return of Basque researchers who are currently working outside of the Basque Country.

The research group of UPV/EHU is associated with the Department of Physical Chemistry and the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences and Technology at UPV/EHU in Leioa.

The group is a very dynamic, productive, and creative group with wide interests.

PI & CO-PI

Dr. Enrique Rico Ortega

Dr. Enrique Rico Ortega obtained his PhD in 2005. He has worked in some of the most influential quantum information groups in Europe (Innsbruck 2005-08 and 2010-12, Vienna 2008-10, Ulm, and Strasbourg 2013-15).

Since 2015, he has been affiliated as an Ikerbasque Fellow with the University of the Basque Country.

He has multidisciplinary research interests, ranging from quantum information to strongly correlated many-body systems.

Besides overseeing the scientific direction and global coordination of the proposal, Dr Enrique Rico Ortega will contribute with his ability in quantum simulations for condensed-matter and high-energy physics in different quantum technologies and characterization of topological
matter in open quantum systems.

With more than 40 papers published in internationally reviewed journals, Dr Rico has collected around 6400 citations and reached an h-factor of 24.

Prof . Dr. Gunar Schnell

Prof . Dr. Gunar Schnell is an IKERBASQUE Research Professor associated with the Department of Physics at UPV/EHU. In 2008 he joined DESY as scientific staff leading up to the post in Bilbao in 2011.

His research interests focus on the experimental and phenomenological investigation of QCD.

He has contributed substantially to the study of the (spin) structure of nucleons, especially from the experimental side where he as part of various collaborations published several groundbreaking results (1 “topcite=1000+”, 6 “topcite=500+”).
G. Schnell is heavily involved in the study of transverse-momentum distributions (TMDs), for which he led the analysis and publication effort of the HERMES collaboration. G. Schnell participates in several Scientific/Advisory Committees of conferences, was a long standing member of CERN’s PS and SPS Programme Committee, and co-convenor of CERN’s Physics Beyond Collider QCD working group, contributing to the Physics Briefing Book of the 2020 European Strategy for Particle Physics update.

Role in project

The UPV/EHU node will take part in all WPs in the project, exploiting its ability to analyze many-body systems with quantum information tools to benchmark and support the development of novel architectures for quantum simulators, while at the same time profiting strongly from its experience in high-energy physics and quantum chromodynamics.
